How to Start a Vietnamese Car Club Focused on Vintage Japanese Sports Cars

You already know a handful of people with 80s and 90s Japanese sports cars in Vietnam. Start with them. A small group of five or six owners can run the first events and handle the basics without big overhead.

Find your first members

Look in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Facebook groups for AE86, RX-7, S2000, and Skyline owners. Message three people this week and ask if they want to meet for coffee. One owner in District 7 brought his Celica and two friends showed up the same day.

  1. Post a short note in existing car groups with photos of your car.
  2. Invite owners to a 30-minute parking lot chat after work.
  3. Ask each person to bring one more owner next time.

Set up the club basics

Register as a simple social group with the local authorities so you can book public spaces. Keep dues at 200,000 VND per month to cover venue fees and basic insurance. Use a shared Google Sheet for member cars and contact details.

Item First step Example
Group name Pick something short Vintage JDM Vietnam
Bank account Open a basic one Joint account at Vietcombank
Meeting spot Book one regular place Parking lot behind Cafe RuNam in Saigon
  • One person handles money and messages.
  • Another tracks event dates.
  • Everyone else just shows up with their car.

Run your first three events

Keep the first meet simple. Sunday morning at 7 a.m. in a quiet lot. Next event: a short drive to a nearby viewpoint. Third event: invite one local mechanic to talk about parts sourcing from Japan.

Send the date and location in a single WhatsApp message two days before. Ask members to reply with their car model so you can plan parking. After three events you will know who shows up regularly and who fades out.
